Actio provides REACH and RoHS expertise to electronics, aerospace industries

PORTSMOUTH, NH August 25, 2009 – Actio Corporation, the leading provider of software for environmental compliance in supply chain materials management, provided expertise last Thursday to thought-leaders attending the Environmental Safety & Health Association for High Technology (SESHA) conference in Beverly, MA.

Actio was an event sponsor, along with Honeywell Analytics and Axcelis Technologies.  Actio focused on software automation that solves environmental compliance challenges.

Compliance challenges include REACH – an acronym for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals.  REACH is environmental regulation that went into effect on June 1, 2007.  It requires that companies register all chemicals and substances in their products if manufacturing in, or importing into, the EU.  REACHtracker is the market-leading online software solution for REACH, used by companies such as Stanley Works and MeadWestVaco.

Under REACH, products can be effectively banned simply for lack of substance registration. In order to know what issues the company is faced with, a manufacturer needs to know what substances are going into the parts and materials being purchasing from vendors, including product packaging.  Actio solves this problem by automating supply chain communications, information gathering / management, and substance ‘roll-ups’ at the product or legal entity level.

Actio also addressed Bill-of-Materials (BOM) tracking, chemical waste and emissions reporting, the ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive, and general principles of environmental compliance in a product manufacturing supply chain.  Actio demonstrated how its product for REACH, REACHtracker, solves issues around tracking chemicals and substances for regulatory compliance.

“Actio always looks forward to meeting with other environmental thought-leaders in manufacturing,” said Chris Nowak, Director of Business Development at Actio.  “These events often become think tanks as we are all able to share best practices relating to product compliance.

“A lot has changed recently in the semiconductor and electronics space,” Nowak pointed out.  “Global compliance – including REACH, RoHS and many other directives – has been a challenge for companies with European market share or market share aspirations.
Increasingly complex regulations create an on-going problem for manufacturers.  Actio makes it their business to remind people in the business community that compliance and going green – as it were – doesn’t have to be problematic at all.

“Actio was pleased to address questions about how SaaS software can manage materials – down to the substance level – in a manufacturing lifecycle and throughout a manufacturer’s supply chain,” said Nowak. “We enjoy reassuring any audience that there is a secure, permissions-based, automated solution that is cost-effective, painless to implement, and works with any ERP such as SAP or Oracle.”

With just a browser, Actio customers can screen accurate, up-to-date substance data against ever-changing legislation, including state and local ordinances, as well as broad directives such as REACH and RoHS.  The Actio solution has been called the point where manufacturing, supply chain materials management, and green initiatives meet.

Hosted by Axcelis, the August 20th SESHA event was designed to assemble thought-leaders in electronics and electrical equipment manufacturing. The conference was sponsored by environmentally-alert companies such as Actio, Axcelis and Honeywell Analytics. The event agenda focused on the current state of semiconductor, photovoltaic and related high technology industries in regards to relevant legislation and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) regulations.
