Wetlands and Water Allocation: U.S. Policy
By Chris Watts (Johns Hopkins University), Regulatory Expert at Actio Corp.
"In terms of pollution," writes Watts, "there is certainly a downside to integrating human and wetland water needs, as demonstrated in one study conducted to determine the effect of using wastewater effluent on wetlands. Because human populations use so much water, we are sometimes left with having to find alternative ways to provide enough water to habitats like wetlands, particularly those that require greater levels of management.
